MEE SIU Obituary

Mee Jing Wong Siu (1933-2021)

It is with unbearable sadness that her family announces the passing of Mee Jing Wong Siu, 88, on July 12, 2021. Born in Canton, China to Tong S. Wong (father) and Lai Ying Yee Wong (mother), she is pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Yee Keung Siu, and survived by her children Jayni Kosoff (Brian Kosoff), Landa Low (Don Low), Patty Siu (Michael Louie), Lilly Siu (Peter Zmuidzinas), and Burton Siu, her grandchildren Christina Morris, Daniel Morris, Catherine Morris, Helena Siu-Zmuidzinas, Jacob Siu-Zmuidzinas, and Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas, her brothers and sisters Mee Fong Gee, Raymond Wong (Margaret Wong), Roland Wong, Betty Haglund (John Haglund), nieces and nephews Sue Shem (Bill Shem), Wendell Gee, Walter Gee, Stephanie Joe (Wellington Joe), Teresa Wong-Jones (Terrence Jones), Tracey Wong (Bill McCarthy), Tricia Wong (Doug Endo), Jennifer Border (Scott Border), Jack Haglund (Sarah Lehmann), and 14 grand nieces and grandnephews.
Her whole life centered around her family. She was a devoted and caring spouse, a loving and generous mother, and an affectionate and doting grandmother. She was the quintessential "Mom" who never hesitated to put her husband and her children's needs before her own.
She grew up in China where she attended boarding school as a young girl. She was a diligent and hard-working student who enjoyed learning. While in high school, she met her future husband and later continued to university where she attained her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with plans to become a chemistry teacher.
After moving to Hong Kong, getting married and having three children, the family emigrated to the United States where she re-joined her family and began a new life in San Francisco. She was undaunted by the tremendous challenge of navigating her way in a country where she did not speak the language. Driven by her strong desire to do the best for her family, she was able to overcome any language barriers.
While her husband worked to support the family, she tirelessly ran the household and raised five children. She saw them through college, then married, and then with kids of their own. For this lifetime achievement, she was honored as "Mother of the Year" in 2011 by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and Chinese Consolidated Women's Association.
She loved flowers of any kind, her favorites being roses, orchids and peonies in bright red and pink colors. She was a passionate and gifted gardener who was renowned for having a green thumb and often "adopted" distressed plants from others and magically nursed them back to glorious health. She enjoyed spending time in her front yard surrounded by her treasured orchid plants, or in her garden room where she so proudly displayed a flowering Christmas cactus that was a gift from her father some 50 years ago.
She was a talented self-taught cook whose fried chicken was a huge favorite at family gatherings. In recent years, she re-discovered her love of music and singing and found great joy in playing card games with others.
Her petite stature and proper demeanor belied her fierce inner strength and drive. She was the heart and soul of the family and will be deeply missed by all.
